Recently I came across one of my old writable CDs which contained decades old photographs. Perusing through the pics I noticed something: there were quite a bit of architectural photographs. Only a few of them I actually remember taking as if the rest were shot on instinct. Whether you shoot a few or one hundred photos at a stint, you’re not going to remember them all. My friend and I would walk around concrete cityscapes, woodlands, and even cemeteries to photograph to our heart’s content. Originally photography was a hobby, using cheap and sometimes half functional equipment. Also this was during a time when I had zero understanding or knowledge of the craft. But institutionally I had a feeling it was all about lines and compositional balance within the frame.
My career had been leaning towards design (and some marketing), weighted with my two art/design degrees. That path had felt like the obvious choice. But it seems fate had other plans, and due to several suggestions and a crippling student loan debt, I started to dabble in photographing Real Estate. It wasn’t until I shot my first couple of houses I realized how much I enjoyed the field.
Over a decade later I’m still photographing dwellings, structures and monoliths. As I mentioned before, it’s about the lines and balance. Even on my down time I’m out there photographing buildings and spaces. This is not only a means for a mortgage payment and cat food, I live for this shit.
I’m including a few of my favorite “pre career” architectural photographs. I think they represent my early roots in the industry. and exhibit my instinctual desire and love for composing, and capturing architecture. I’m sure I appreciate and enjoy these than you out there on the internet. So I guess this page is more for me than it is for you.
